On April 25, 2025, the ICAR-National Institute of Natural Fibre Engineering and Technology (ICAR-NINFET), Kolkata, became a vibrant hub of creativity and innovation as it hosted a landmark Industry–Institute Interface. The event, graced by Union Minister of Textiles, Shri Giriraj Singh, brought together leading minds from government, industry, and research to foster collaboration and drive sustainable growth in India’s natural fibre sector.

A Platform for Collaboration and Innovation
The Industry–Institute Interface at ICAR-NINFET was organized to bridge the gap between research institutions and industry players. Shri Giriraj Singh, serving as the Chief Guest, called upon industry representatives to actively participate in commercializing innovative technologies developed at the institute. He emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to develop diversified, value-added products that can uplift the sector and benefit society at large.
Smt. Padmini Singla, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Textiles, highlighted the importance of technology transfer from institutes like ICAR-NINFET to industry partners, underscoring its role in societal advancement. Dr. D.B. Shakyawar, Director of ICAR-NINFET, showcased the institute’s achievements, including collaborations with industries and stakeholders, which have accelerated the dissemination and adoption of innovative technologies and products.
The event saw enthusiastic participation from representatives of the Ministry of Textiles, National Jute Board (NJB), Jute Corporation of India (JCI), Indian Jute Industries Research Association (IJIRA), jute mills, and various R&D organizations, reflecting the sector’s collective commitment to sustainable development.

KrishiCraft: Spotlight on Artisans and Sustainable Products
Among the many highlights of the day was the KrishiCraft stall, which drew significant attention from dignitaries, industry leaders, and visitors alike. KrishiCraft, known for empowering rural artisans and promoting sustainable craftsmanship, set up an engaging exhibit that showcased the transformative potential of jute and other natural fibres.
The stall featured the works of six talented artisans, each presenting a unique array of handcrafted products. The display included:
- Stylish jute bags
- Elegant dresses
- Decorative items
- Intricate jewellery
- Home décor pieces
- Everyday utility products
All items were crafted from jute, demonstrating the versatility and eco-friendly appeal of this natural fibre. The artisans’ participation not only provided them with a platform to share their skills and stories but also highlighted the importance of artisan-led innovation in the value chain.
Minister’s Interaction with KrishiCraft Team
A memorable moment at the event was the visit of Shri Giriraj Singh to the KrishiCraft stall. The minister took a keen interest in the exhibits, engaging directly with the artisans and the KrishiCraft team. Shubhangee, an intern representing KrishiCraft, introduced the minister to the organization’s mission and initiatives. Their brief yet impactful conversation centered on KrishiCraft’s efforts to empower rural artisans, promote sustainable livelihoods, and leverage technology for wider market access.
Shri Giriraj Singh praised the outstanding work of ICAR-NINFET scientists and the KrishiCraft team, especially in areas such as:
- Jute yarn softening for woollen garments
- Development of bamboo-jute-viscose-blended fabrics
- Outreach programs for artisan empowerment
- Launching an online platform to market jute diversified products
His appreciation served as a motivating acknowledgment for the artisans and innovators present, reinforcing the government’s support for sustainable and inclusive growth in the sector.
Footfall and Artisan Participation at the KrishiCraft Stall
The KrishiCraft stall witnessed footfall of 150+ people throughout the event, attracting industry representatives, government officials, researchers, and media. Visitors were drawn to the vibrant display of products and the live demonstrations by artisans, which offered a glimpse into the meticulous craftsmanship and creativity involved in jute-based product development.
The six artisans at the stall became the face of grassroots innovation, sharing their experiences and techniques with curious attendees. Their active participation underscored the role of traditional knowledge and skills in driving contemporary sustainable solutions.
